History Docent & Tour Guide @ Spirits Alive (Eastern Cemetery) in Portland, Maine
At Spirits Alive, I have the privilege of working in the summer season to support this wonderful 501(c)(3) organization. The organization does restoration, upkeep, and takes very good care of Maine’s oldest known burial site. The cemetery sits on Portland’s beautiful Munjoy Hill, just above the bay, and looks out to Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth.
My duties at Spirits Alive include leading tours around the cemetery, soliciting patrons for the organization, and preservation of the Dead House on the cemetery land. There are tours an hour long, and 15 minutes long. Both tours are great; one is an overview and the other allows visitors to go in depth about the history of Portland and its predecessors. I love being out on the hill above the bay in the morning, sharing local tales and histories with patrons. Please check out SpiritsAlive.org to find out more about this organization, or come by for a tour.
Foster Cat Host @ Humane Society Silicon Valley in Silicon Valley, CA
At the Humane Society I get to help foster cats that need to adjust to a home or may be shy. This summer I got to foster Eleanor, a beautiful black and white cat who was very shy when I first got her. She was 3 years old, but had never lived in a home before. I worked with Elaine Yastishock to choose a cat that needed a quiet space to get to know her human. She came from the streets of San Jose and had been at the shelter for 7 months.
It didn’t take long for this kitty to come out of her shell. We had a very happy result in the end: she was adopted by a wonderful lady. Visit the Humane Society Silicon Valley website to find out more about becoming a foster parent!
